Electrification in the Valleys
The Welsh Government has now made the big announcement of the winner of the new Welsh franchise, but what does this mean for electrification?
It is clear that the Welsh Government are pushing ahead with rail electrification in the Valleys, and this will be 25kV. It was also poignant that the Governmental press launch was in the Electrification training school in Coleg y Cymoedd.
We have drawn up in the handy map below (in red) what we believe will be electrified, approx. 120stkm of track. The main Valley routes of Treherbert, Aberdare, Merthyr Tydfil, Coryton and Rhymney will be electrified down into Cardiff Queen Street and Cardiff Central. What we still don't know is the exact programme, also whether this will be full electrification or discontinuous is still unknown. The routes will have light rail and tram/train options so the final system will be interesting. This is a positive move and we look forward to seeing plans evolve.
